Reid S. HighlanderA shareholder with McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips, Reid Highlander focuses his practice on workers' compensation defense. He successfully defended Missouri workers' compensation cases for the state of Missouri as an employer, for the Missouri Second Injury Fund, and for private employers. Mr. Highlander presents oral arguments to the Missouri Labor and Industrial Relations Commission and the Missouri Court of Appeals.
Mr. Highlander regularly defends workers’ compensation claims for large employers with difficult union environments. He actively develops new strategies for defending claims in light of the recent statutory changes and encourages strong initial investigation to take advantage of the favorable sections within the statute.
Mr. Highlander frequently lectures at seminars for employers, insurance adjusters, claims managers, human resources representatives, safety directors and workers’ compensation liaisons, explaining new cases and statutory developments and providing strategic advice for handling injuries and claims.
Mr. Highlander is a former assistant attorney general for the state of Missouri. In his time with the Attorney General’s office, he handled W. C. Conley v. Treasurer of Missouri, where the Court of Appeals agreed with his arguments that the claimant should be bound by his prior settlements. This concept was later codified in the 2005 statutory changes.
At the University of Tulsa College of Law, Mr. Highlander was elected as Magister of the Phi Delta Phi legal honors fraternity and served as an editor of the Energy Law Journal, published in conjunction with the National Energy Environmental Law Policy Institute. He was awarded a certificate of merit for his outstanding contributions to the Journal and was also awarded the Scribes Award by the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects in recognition of his excellence and high attainments in meritorious writing.
