John D. Jurcyk

John Jurcyk represents employers and their insurance carriers in all areas of workers' compensation and general corporate defense in Kansas and Missouri. He has extensive experience in defending owner-controlled and contractor-controlled insurance plans. John has been practicing for 40 years.

Mr. Jurcyk successfully defended the employer and insurance carrier in Boucher v. Peerless Products, a Kansas Supreme Court case decision that denied permanent disability to any employee disabled from employment for less than one week. He convinced the Kansas Court of Appeals that fear of AIDS was not a viable cause of action and obtained dismissal of Reynolds v. Highland Manor, Inc.

He often argues cases before the Missouri Labor and Industrial Relations Commission, the Kansas Workers’ Compensation Board of Appeals, the Missouri and Kansas Courts of Appeals and the Kansas Supreme Court. Mr. Jurcyk is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell, listed in the Best Lawyers in America, named by Super Lawyers as a Top 100 Lawyer in Kansas and Missouri, and included in the “Best of Class” listing on the bestofus.com. Mr. Jurcyk was recently named one of the “Best Lawyers in Kansas City” by Ingram’s Magazine and was selected as one of 50 Kansans you need to know by the same publication.

Mr. Jurcyk lectures on safety and investigative programs for employers and helps implement plans to reduce workers’ compensation claim frequency. He presents continuing legal education programs for the Kansas Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute’s Workers’ Compensation Committee, and the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association and has lectured at the Washburn University School of Law, where he sponsors an Appellate Advocacy Scholarship.

A shareholder at McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips, Mr. Jurcyk has served on the firm’s board of directors. He sat on the Maur Hill Mount Academy Board of Directors and the St. Agnes Parish Foundation Board. Mr. Jurcyk is a past President of the Kansas Bar Foundation Board of Trustees and serves as treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Bar PAC. He served on the Washburn Law School Association Board. Active in the Boy Scouts of America, he was committee chair of his local boy scout troop from 2005 to 2011 and was a Northern Tier Scouting District committee member, where he has also served as the Friends of Scouting effort chairman, he served on the Heart of America Council executive board. He and his wife devote much of their time to their three sons.
